Robertson and Allbery Combine for Five Hits to Help Baseball Thwart the Pirates, 4-2

Omaha, Neb. -- A solo home run from sophomore Will Robertson in the first inning gave the Creighton Baseball team a lead the Bluejays would not relinquish in a 4-2 win over Seton Hall on Friday, May 4.
The victory moved Creighton to 26-13 on the season and 5-7 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall fell to 21-16-1 overall and 8-2 in conference action.
Senior Ryan Tapani worked around a hit by pitch in the top half of the first game, bringing his squad to the dish. After the first two Bluejay hitters were retired, Robertson blasted a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for his 11th long ball of the season.
Creighton added to its lead with a run in the as sophomore Jason Allbery drove a leadoff single up the middle. Fellow sophomore Parker Upton bunted Allbery to second, then junior Clark Brinkman lined an RBI double down the right field line to give the Bluejays a 2-0 edge.
Seton Hall answered with a run in the fourth, getting a leadoff double from Mike Alescsio, a bunt single by Ryan Ramiz and an RBI ground out from Tyler Shedler-McAvoy. Tapani held the Pirates right there by ending the inning on an unconventional 1-2-4 double play. Tapani struck out Casey Dana for the second out of the inning, then junior Mike Emodi cut down Shedler-McAvoy trying to steal second.
The Bluejay answered with a run in the fourth as junior Jack Strunc smoked a one-out double to left and junior Ryan Mantle smacked a two-out RBI single to left.
The Pirates had a chance to draw closer in the sixth as Seton Hall had runners at second and third with just one down, but Tapani ended the threat with a pop up and a grounder both to short.
Seton Hall did punch across a run in the seventh, chasing Tapani with a one-out double from Christian Del Castillo and a walk to Connor Hood. Bluejay head coach Ed Servais used three relievers to get out of the inning allowing just one run. Sophomore Jonah Smith stranded two Pirates to close out the inning by freezing Al Molina for a strikeout.
Creighton responded once more in the seventh as sophomore Isaac Collins blasted a two-out double to straight away center, then Robertson laced an RBI double to left-center.
With a two-run cushion, Smith closed the door by retiring the Pirates in order in both the eighth and ninth frames.
Tapani earned the win (8-1), allowing two runs on six hits and two walks in 6.1 innings, while Smith notched his fourth save of the season with 2.1 innings of flawless relief. Tapani left the game with seven strikeouts, while Smith punched out five of the seven Pirates he faced.
Seton Hall starter Shane McCarthy took the loss (3-4), allowing four runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings.
Allbery had one of his best games of the season at the plate with three hits, while Robertson had two hits, two RBI and a run scored.
The Bluejays and Pirates continue their three-game set on Saturday, with first pitch set for 6:32 pm. The game will be televised locally on NET (Nebraska Educational Television).
