Bluejay Women's Soccer Suffers 2-0 Loss in Season Opener

After scoreless first half, Iowa tallies two in final 45
Iowa City, Iowa. -- Despite a strong first half, the Creighton women's soccer suffered a 2-0 loss to Iowa on Sunday, Aug. 19 in the 2018 season opener.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 0-1-0, while Iowa moved to 1-0-1 on the season.
Early in the match the Bluejays seemed to have the upper hand as Creighton forced Iowa goalkeeper Claire Graves into two diving saves, one on a shot by freshman Aline Reinkober and another from sophomore Keelie Fothergill.
Iowa gained its offensive footing as the first half wore on, but neither team scored as the match went to halftime scoreless.
Early in the second half the Bluejays got a team save from junior Taryn Jakubowski, but on the play a foul was called against Creighton in the box. The resulting penalty kick was converted by Iowa's Natalie Winters to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 edge in the 47th minute.
Iowa added to its edge in the 56th minute as Riley Whitaker sent a shot that glanced off a Bluejay defender into the back of the net. Kaleigh Haus was credited with an assist for Iowa.
In the match the Bluejays were out shot, 15-10.
Creighton returns to action on Friday, Aug. 24 as the Bluejays head to Colorado to face Air Force at 7:00 pm (CT).
