Bluejays Earn Last Minute Win at St. John's as Carda Delivers in the Clutch
The tandem of senior Audrey Faber and sophomore Temi Carda delivered 39 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter, to lift the Creighton women's basketball team to a thrilling 65-63 win at St. John's on Sunday, Jan. 13.
Knotted at 49-49 moments later, Creighton surged ahead with seven straight on consecutive jumpers from Carda as well as a bonus free throw for the guard, then junior Morgan Turner delivered a bucket in the paint to push the Bluejay edge to 56-49 with 4:10 left.
The Red Storm answered the challenge with a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to go back in front 59-58 (1:47). Junior Jaylyn Agnew hit one of two from the charity stripe to tie the game for the fifth time, 59-59 with 1:16 left. In the final minute the Bluejays turned to Faber in the post and the Iowa native delivered to put Creighton up 63-61 with 19 seconds left.
St. John's quickly countered with a layup from Tiana England, to knot the game for a seventh time at 63-63. Following Creighton's final timeout head coach Jim Flanery went to Carda along the baseline for a driving layup to put Creighton up 65-63 with three seconds left. With a foul to give, the Bluejays took their final foul with one second left on the clock.
The Red Storm had one final chance to force overtime as Agnew was called for a foul on the inbounds play. St. John's Qadashah Hoppie stepped to the line, but misfired on both free throw attempts to give Creighton the game.
Carda and Faber Grabbed the Headlines, but Bluejays' Dominant Fourth Quarter Set the Stage Against St. John's
After shooting just 3-of-12 (25%) in the first quarter (St. John's was just 5-of-16 for 31.3%) and trailing 31-22 at the half, Creighton found its shooting touch in the final ten minutes at Carnesecca Arena. The Bluejays blistered from the field in the fourth, shooting 76.9% as Creighton hit 10 of its final 13 shots to collect the two-point win.
