Down 54-49 with 1:22 left, Bluejays' 12-0 run seals overtime victory
Omaha, Neb. -- Down 54-49 with 1:22 remaining in the fourth quarter the Creighton women's basketball team delivered a 12-0 run to grab a 61-54 lead with 1:56 left in the extra session as the Bluejays bested Xavier 66-62 in overtime on Friday, Jan. 18.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 10-8 on the season and 4-3 in BIG EAST action, while Xavier fell to 10-7 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
With the game on the line it was freshman Payton Brotzki that answered the challenge, knocking down an open trey from the right wing to get the Bluejays within two at 54-52. Creighton came up with a defensive stop on the ensuing Musketeers position, but a turnover gave the ball back to Xavier. Using their three fouls to give, the clock drifted down to 23 seconds. On Xavier's fourth play inbound play from the edge, sophomore Tatum Rembao grabbed the steal. Following Creighton's final timeout, senior Audrey Faber elevated for the game tying shot and was fouled. The Iowa native calmly sank both from the charity stripe to force an extra session.
The additional frame saw the Bluejays go to Faber for the lead on the opening position, then the game turned as Faber found fellow senior Jade Owens for a three-pointer from the left corner. Moments later Brotzki found junior Jaylyn Agnew for a wide open layup as she cut to the rim to put Creighton up 61-54. In the final minute of overtime Xavier got within three on two separate occasions, but the Bluejays hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Early in the game the Bluejays were blistering from long range, hitting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc in the opening frame. Creighton went 7-of-14 from the field in the opening frame to take a 19-16 edge into the second.
As hot as the Bluejays were in the first quarter, Creighton's shooting must have dipped lower the freezing lows outside in the second. The Bluejays went 0-for-8 from the field in the second frame, getting outscored 18-2 in the period to head to the locker room down 34-21.
Creighton clawed back into the game in the third period by turning up their defensive intensity. Creighton held Xavier to 3-for-11 from the field and forced five turnovers as the Bluejays briefly claimed the lead in the final minute and went into the final period down 44-42. Offensively the Bluejays turned to their big three as Faber delivered 11 in the period, sophomore Temi Carda had eight and Agnew added in a bucket.
Faber opened the fourth with a trey to move the Bluejays back in front at 45-44 and Creighton held the edge at 49-48 (3:50) before Xavier rattled off six straight to set the stage for the Bluejays' comeback.
Four Bluejays closed the contest in double figures led by 18 from Faber. Carda closed the game with 15, while Owens delivered 13. Agnew finished the game with 12 points and 13 rebounds for her fifth career double-double.
Xavier got a game-high 23 points from A'riana Gray, who also collected 12 rebounds. Na'Teshia Owens also reached double figures with 11 points in the loss.
