Johnny Torres Selected As Coach For 2019 adidas MLS Combine

Torres is one of eight college coaches selected to guide draft prospects Jan. 3-9 in Orlando
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton men's soccer head coach Johnny Torres will serve as one of eight coaches at the upcoming 2019 adidas MLS Combine which will be held Jan. 3-9 in Orlando, Florida.
Torres joins college head coaches Bo Oshoniyi (Dartmouth), Damon Rensing (Michigan State) and Mike Noonan (Clemson), associate head coaches Matt Chulis (Virginia) and Steve Totten (Princeton) and assistant coaches Jeff Matteo (Seton Hall) and Michael Behonick (Pittsburgh) for the event.Â
Top collegiate players from across the country will showcase their talents in front of representatives from all 24 MLS clubs during the weeklong combine. All invited players will be eligible for selection in the 2019 SuperDraft presented by adidas which will take place at 12 p.m. Eastern on Friday, Jan. 11 in Chicago's McCormick Place in conjunction with the United Soccer Coaches Convention.
Creighton's Joel Rydstrand and Akeem Ward each received invites to the combine and will be part of the talent pool in Orlando.Â
Torres was named Creighton's head men's soccer coach on Nov. 12 after spending each of the past 12 seasons as an assistant coach for the Bluejays.
Torres, a Creighton Athletics Hall of Famer, earned NSCAA National Assistant Coach of the Year recognition in 2012. He also earned Great Lakes Region Assistant Coach of the Year status in 2015, and Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2012.
The Colombia native has been on the Creighton bench for nine NCAA Tournament appearances, seven regular-season conference titles, and three conference tournament championships. Most recently, Torres and the Bluejay staff earned BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year recognition following the 2018 season after securing the regular-season conference crown.

A two-time National Player of the Year (1996, 1997), Torres was the fifth overall pick in the first round of the 1998 MLS Draft by the New England Revolution, and played for the Revolution for four seasons. He also played for the Miami Fusion and Chicago Fire.
