Last Meeting Between Pirates and Bluejays Had to be Seen To Be Believed
After racing out to a 24-4 lead in the first quarter, the Creighton women's basketball was forced into overtime by Seton Hall on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018. In the extra session the Bluejays delivered a decisive 17-0 shutout to claim their third consecutive victory.
Up 64-58 with 1:54 remaining in regulation, Creighton appeared to have outlasted a scrappy Pirate team. Seton Hall, however, had other ideas as the Pirates forced four Bluejay
turnovers down the stretch to pull even. Seton Hall even had a shot to claim the contest as Inja Butina's fall away jumper with five seconds remaining came up just short.
The overtime session began with a Bluejay defensive stop, then Olivia Elger drove the left side and dropped in a circus shot. Elger was fouled on the play, but her free throw bounced into the hands of Jaylyn Agnew. Seconds later Elger was connecting from long range to put Creighton up 69-64 (4:10).
Following another defensive stop the ball movement that led to Creighton's early lead yielded an open layup for Ali Greene. Creighton dealt the knockout blow moments later as Sydney Lamberty knocked down a three-ball from the corner as a foul was called. Greene knocked down one of two from the line giving Creighton a 77-64 lead with 2:38 left. The Bluejays held the Pirates to 0-for-7 from the field and 0-2 from the charity stripe in the extra session, while the Bluejays were 6-of-8 (75%) in overtime.
Bluejays Answer Villanova Loss With Strong Performance Against Hoyas
Following a tought two-point loss to Villanova (54-52) on Jan. 4, the Bluejays felt they needed to get a little tougher. Creighton did just that as the Bluejays claimed the rebounding battle for just the third time this season against Georgetown two days later on Jan. 6. Crashing the boards helped the Bluejays outscore the Hoyas 36-20 in the paint and post a 65-38 win.
Faber Extends BIG EAST Scoring Lead with 20-20 Effort
One of the reasons the Bluejays earned the win over Georgetown was senior Audrey Faber's effectiveness in the post. Audrey was 9-of-12 (75%) from inside the arc. She closed the game with 24 points. Two days earlier Faber notched 20 points against Villanova. The back-to-back 20-point games helped Faber move to 17.7 ppg to lead the BIG EAST Conference.
