Men's Soccer Endures First BIG EAST Setback, 1-0, At Seton Hall

Bluejays held a 12-7 edge in shots, including 7-2 in the second half
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Creighton men's soccer team dropped its first BIG EAST match of the season, 1-0, against Seton Hall on Friday night in South Orange, New Jersey.
The Bluejays fell to 2-1-0 in league play and 6-3-1 overall, while the Pirates improved to 2-1-0 during BIG EAST action and 4-4-0 overall.Â
Seton Hall converted the game-winning goal during the 33rd minute.Â
The host Pirates controlled possession during the first half as Creighton did not record its first shot until the 31st minute when Luke Mitchell's header hit the far post following a corner kick. The Bluejays fired four more shots before the end of the first 45 minutes.
Creighton turned the tides and outshot Seton Hall 7-2 in the second half during the Bluejays' attempt for the equalizer.
About 12 minutes after the halftime break, Luke Haakenson, Creighton's leading goal scorer, fired a shot from 15 yards out that hit the crossbar.
Diego Dutilh tallied a pair of shots in a little over a minute span for two of the Bluejays' most dangerous opportunities of second half. Dutilh's first shot hit the crossbar and fell straight down in play before being cleared and his second went wide to the right with 20 minutes remaining to play.Â
Creighton ended the match with a 12-7 edge in shots, including 7-2 in the second half. The Bluejays attempted the final six shots of the match. The Pirates recorded their final shot of the match in the 58th minute.
Seton Hall held a 3-1 final tally in shots on goal. Kuba Polat's strike during the 43rd mintue resulted in the Pirates' lone save of the match, but three other Bluejay shots hit the woodwork.Â
Daniel Espeleta paced Creighton with three shots as seven different players each had at least one. Bluejay goalkeeper Collin Valdivia recorded two saves during the loss.
Creighton returns to action next week at Xavier. The Bluejays and Musketeers will meet on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. Central in Cincinnati, Ohio.Â
