Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep With 3-0 Win at Seton Hall

Jays have won 29 straight sets over the Pirates
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The No. 14 Creighton Volleyball team won its sixth straight match with a 3-0 road win at Seton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 5. The Bluejays have now won 11 consecutive matches against the Pirates, and 29 straight sets.
Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-16, 25-12.
Creighton improved to 11-3 overall and tied Marquette atop the BIG EAST standings with a 4-0 league mark. Seton Hall dropped to 6-12 and is 1-3 in conference play.
Creighton sophomore Jaela Zimmerman finished just shy of a double-double, notching a team-best nine kills and adding nine digs to lead a balanced offensive effort. Naomi Hickman had eight kills and hit .471 and Keeley Davis also added nine kills. Directing the offense was senior Madelyn Cole, who had 33 assists and six kills, her most as a Bluejay, on .750 hitting in eight swings. Brittany Witt led the team in digs for the 14th time in as many matches this fall with 12 digs while also adding a pair of aces to reach the century mark in her career. CU recorded 44 kills, eight aces, 43 digs and five blocks on .305 hitting overall.
Seton Hall was paced by Julia Wilkins' match-best 13 kills. The Pirates hit .106 and had 27 kills, four aces, 39 digs and a pair of blocks.
"I thought we served another good match, which has been a priority for us," said head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "We weathered Seton Hall when they had us tied up late in the first set. Going on a clean run was good for us. Anytime you can sweep a road weekend you're pleased with that."
The first set included eight ties and eight lead changes before Creighton flipped a switch at the end of the frame. Trailing 19-18, CU called timeout and immediately scored the final seven points on Madelyn Cole's serve. A combo block from Erica Kostelac and Hickman closed out the set.
Riding high from a 7-0 run to end the first set, Creighton opened the second set with an identical 7-0 run on Cole's serve and never trailed. The lead stretched to 10-2 before being whittled to within four on two occasions before CU finished off the 25-16 set two victory.
CU took the lead for good early in the third set on Witt's 100th career ace, rolling to leads of 10-3 and 19-8 before completing the sweep on a kill by Kostelac.
Creighton returns to action next Friday morning with an 11 a.m. match at DePaul.
