Women's Golf In Second After First Day of Creighton Classic

Margaret Hickey and Katie Allen both tied for second place
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's golf team stands in second place at the midway point of the Creighton Classic, a 36-hole event being held at Oak Hills Country Club in Omaha. The Bluejays stand just three shots behind Northern Iowa after an opening-round 306 team total.
Creighton was led by junior Margaret Hickey and sophomore Katie Allen after both shot 74s on their home course. Both women had three birdies on the back nine of Monday's round. Allen now leads CU this fall with a 75.6 scoring average, with Hickey not far behind at 77.7.
Three other Bluejays are tied for ninth after opening round 79s -- Amelia Lee, Claire Orcutt and Gabby Tremblay. Lee and Orcutt both birdied the par-3 12th hole, and Tremblay birdied two of her final three holes to finish her round with a flourish. All three women are seeking their first top-10 finish of the fall.
Creighton also has three women competing as individuals who don't factor in the team scoring race. Kristin Goertz is tied for 13th place after an 80, and Delaney Benson stands in a tie for 32nd after shooting a 91 on Monday. Katie Wilson had to withdraw after nine holes due to injury.
UNI leads in the team standings, and also boasts the top performer in Emily Snelling. Snelling fired a one-under 72 on Monday thanks in part to birdies on the 16th and 17th holes. UNI's Hannah Bermel is part of a three-way tie for second with Hickey and Allen after also shooting a 74.
Drake stands in third place after a 322, 16 shots behind Creighton in the race for second place. Bellevue (323) sits in fourth place, five shots ahead of Nebraska-Omaha (328).
The tournament is being played on a a par 73 Oak Hills layout measuring 5,952 yards. Five teams and 36 competitors are participating.
Tuesday's final round starts at 9 a.m. and is free to attend.
