Jake Ashford scored the game winner for his first career goal
OMAHA, Neb. – Freshman Jake Ashford delivered a golden goal to lift the Creighton men's soccer team to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Butler on Saturday at Morrison Stadium during Creighton's Senior Night.
The Bluejays improved to 8-6-1 on the year and 4-4-0 in BIG EAST play, while moving into sole possession of fourth place in the league standings with one match remaining. Butler fell to 9-6-1 overall and 3-4-1 in conference action.
Ashford converted the golden goal during the 105th minute, rebounding a header attempt from senior Bryce Gibson. Gibson headed Kuba Polat's corner kick towards the goal before the Bulldog goalkeeper saved the ball and deflected it towards the center of the six-yard box. Ashford collected the loose ball and hit the back of the net for his first career goal.
Butler found the back of the net in the fourth minute of the match to take an early lead. Griffin DeBolt fired a shot from the middle of the box off the post and into the back of the net for an early 1-0 advantage.
Creighton equaled the score midway through the first half in the 26th minute. Senior Yudai Tashiro blasted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box past Butler goalkeeper Gabriel Gjergji to even the score at 1-1. A corner kick set the play into motion with senior Younes Boudadi playing a ball down the left side of the box to Polat and Polat placing the ball to the foot of Tashiro.
Butler held a slight 9-8 advantage in shots, while Creighton held a 5-3 lead in corners after the first half of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Paul Kruse collected four saves before the break for the Bluejays.
Creighton applied the offensive pressure to start the second half and had four shots in the first 15 minutes after the break but could not find the back of the net.
Both teams fought to earn the go-ahead goal the remainder of the half but neither team found a way to score. Creighton had multiple chances as a trio of shots from Tashiro and freshman Diego Dutilh were all blocked by the Bulldogs back line.
In the first overtime Butler managed an early scoring opportunity by drawing a foul and sending the free kick just over the crossbar. The Bulldogs tallied three shots in the first OT period.
The Bluejays scored on the first real scoring opportunity for either team in the second overtime.
Creighton closed the match with a 23-14 advantage in shots, including a 15-5 edge in the second half and overtime periods. The Bluejays also earned 11 corners to Butler's five. Kruse collected two saves on the night while Butler's Gjergji made six.
Creighton will wrap up regular-season play on Wednesday by traveling to Washington, D.C. to face off with No. 3 Georgetown. First touch between the Hoyas and Bluejays is set for 1 p.m. at Shaw Field.
