Ashford converted the golden goal on Saturday against Butler
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton's Jake Ashford earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday afternoon. The freshman scored his first career goal on Saturday night and helped Creighton secure a spot in the BIG EAST Championship field.Â
Ashford converted the golden goal during the 105th minute on Saturday night at Morrison Stadium against Butler. The Shawnee, Kansas native found the back of the net on a rebound after an initial header by Bryce Gibson off a corner kick was saved and deflected into the center of the six-yard box.
Ashford owns four appearances as a Bluejay, including three starts. His first appearance and start came on Oct. 19 against No. 7 St. John's.Â
Gibson also earned a spot on this week's BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after recording an assist on Ashford's game-winning goal and limiting the Butler offense to three shots on goal.
Creighton concludes the regular season on Wednesday in Washington, D.C. against No. 3 Georgetown.
The Bluejays have clinched a spot in the six-team field of the 2019 BIG EAST Championship and will play a first-round match on Saturday at a location and time to be determined after Wednesday's results across the league.Â
