About Wichita State
Scouting Wichita State (5-3)
Wichita State has won five of its last six games, falling just at No. 22 Missouri State on Dec. 4th. The Shockers are 1-2 on the road this season, nesting Louisiana Tech (Nov. 20th) and falling at Oral Roberts (Nov. 11) as well as at Missouri State.
The Shockers are a balanced team, with eight players averaging more than six points per game. The team leaders, reserve Mariah McCully, posts 11.7 ppg. Just one other Shocker is averaging double figures as DJ McCarty posts 10.1 ppg.
Wichita State has limited opponents to 66.0 points per game this season, but has struggled to handle the basketball as the Shockers are averaging 17.8 turnovers per game.
Scouting Creighton (7-2)
Tied for the best start under Jim Flanery, the Bluejays have found multiple ways to win this season. Whether its a huge scoring night from senior Jaylyn Agnew (West Virginia and Nebraska), a 12-0 run to close the game (Northern Iowa), a 20+ point effort from junior Tatum Rembao (North Dakota State) or a team defensive effort (South Dakota State), the Bluejays have done it all to claim the win.
Offensively the Bluejays are driven by Agnew, yet six different Bluejays have led the team in scoring this season. Agnew is averaging 18.7 ppg, while junior Temi Carda (11.8 ppg), Rembao (10.3 ppg) and senior Olivia Elger (10.0 ppg) are also bringing double figures to each contests.
The Bluejays have turned to their defense early on this season forcing teams into 14.6 turnovers per game and limiting six of nine opponents to 63 points or less. Creighton is 5-1 in those battles.
The Finish is What Matters!
A furious final four minutes saw the Creighton women's basketball team overcome an nine point deficit with a 12-0 run to secure a 57-54 win over Northern Iowa on Sunday, Dec. 8th.
Trailing 54-45 with 3:07, Northern Iowa missed a chance to make it a double-digit game as Megan Maahs' second free throw went off the rim. Senior Jaylyn Agnew grabbed the rebound and the Bluejays wasted little time finding sophomore Rachael Saunders in the corner for a three-ball to make it 54-48 (3:01). Switching to a pressure defense, Creighton forced a turnover, then junior Temi Carda connected on a mid-range jumper to bring the Bluejays within four at 54-50 (2:33). The Panthers next possession resulted in a missed trey, then Carda connected on a pair of free throws to make it 54-52 (1:45).
Moments later junior Tatum Rembao stole the ball, then raced to the basket to knot the contest at 54-54 with 48 seconds left on the clock. Going for the win, Northern Iowa missed a three-pointer from the corner as sophomore Rachael Saunders grabbed the defensive rebound. With nine seconds left in regulation, the Bluejays missed a trey of their own. Saunders, however, was there for the offensive rebound. On the play Saunders was fouled, sending the Iowa native to the line. She knocked down one of two, to give Creighton its first lead since early in the third quarter (37-36).
The Panthers used their final timeout, advancing the ball once more. Northern Iowa, however, was denied by the Bluejay defense once more. This time Agnew grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Creighton's senior leader sealed the win by draining a pair from the charity stripe.
Putting the 7-2 Start into Perspective
With seven wins in their first nine games, the Bluejays have equaled its best start under head coach Jim Flanery. Two times previously the Bluejays have opened a year 7-2, that coming in 2012-13 and 2002-03. Creighton also got off to a 7-2 start during the 1991-92 season under Bruce Rasmussen. The only time the Bluejays opened a season with a better record through nine games was in 1986-87 as Creighton won eight straight at the onset, posting an 8-1 mark through nine contests.
Remember, Remember the Month of November
The month of November was much kinder in 2019 to the Bluejays than it was in 2018. Last season Creighton opened the year 1-4 in November, while this season the Bluejays went 6-1. Â
