Santa Cruz spent the 2019 season as a freshman at Arizona State
OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton softball head coach Brent Vigness announced the addition of sophomore pitcher Mikayla Santa Cruz for the 2020 season.
"I am so excited and happy to be joining the Bluejay family," Santa Cruz said. "God has a crazy way of putting you in the right place at right time. He put me right at home."
Santa Cruz heads to Omaha after playing her freshman season in 2019 at Arizona State. The Tucson, Arizona native made 14 relief appearances for the Sun Devils last season and logged 20.1 innings in the circle.
She pitched a season-high 3.1 innings of relief and recorded the victory against Nebraska (Feb. 22), while she picked up her first career save with an inning of scoreless work against Illinois State (Feb. 14). The former Sun Devil also pitched against nationally ranked Florida, Michigan and UCLA.
Santa Cruz will be immediately eligible for the 2020 season.
The right-handed pitcher played high school softball for Canyon Del Oro in Tucson. She also helped guide her club team, the Arizona Suncats, to the championship of the 2016 Triple Crown Sports Firework Colorado Tournament.
"The coaching staff is phenomenal," Santa Cruz said. "They give you the tools you need to grow not only as a student-athlete, but also as a person, and that is so important to me. My new teammates make me feels welcomed and that makes me so excited for the season right around the corner. I can't wait to learn new things from my teammates and build friendships that will last a lifetime."
Creighton opens the 2020 season at the H-E-B Classic in San Antonio, Texas. The Bluejays' lid-lifter is scheduled for Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. against defending MAC Tournament champion Toledo.
