SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Ashley Ishimura and Sarah Wilcox each earned three-set victories during singles action, but the Creighton women's tennis team narrowly fell to Missouri State, 4-3, at the Cooper Tennis Complex on Friday night.
The Bluejays dropped to 1-3, while the Bears improved to 3-0.
Missouri State took the first point of the match with convincing victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions.
Erin Epperson secured Creighton's first point with a straight-sets victory at the No. 4 singles position. The sophomore evened her season record at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
The host Bears gained a 3-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6 and a 7-6 (5-0), 6-3 win at the No. 3 singles spot before Creighton evened the overall score with three-set victories at the top two positions.
Wilcox claimed her first singles win of the spring season during the No. 2 match. The freshman cruised in the first set, 6-0, but fell 6-1 in the second. The Prairie Village, Kansas native regained momentum in the deciding frame and earned a 6-2 win to close out the match.
Ishimura rallied from behind in a tightly contest top singles match. The Hawai'i native dropped the opening set 7-5, but battled back to force a tiebreak in the second and did not drop a point in the breaker (7-6, [6-0]). Ishimura evened the overall dual with a 6-4 win in the third and final set.
Missouri State wrapped up the match with a victory at the No. 5 singles position. Creighton's Claire Embree won 6-3 in set No. 1, but fell 6-4 and 6-3 in the final two.
"Credit Missouri State for coming out stronger in doubles in what proved to be the difference," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We just weren't tough enough at a few spots and couldn't quite get things going at a few positions. We did have a couple of great three-set wins by Ashley and Sarah, and Erin cruised in her match.
"We have 12 hours to get over tonight's loss before we play Western Illinois."
The Bluejays will face the Leathernecks at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning in Springfield.
