Bluejays Suffer 7-5 Loss at Wichita State

Wichita, Kan. -- The Creighton Baseball team dropped a 7-5 decision at Wichita in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, March 1. Creighton left 15 men on base in the contest, putting at least one runner on in every frame.

The loss dropped the Bluejays to 5-2 on the season, while the Shockers moved to 4-5.

The Bluejays got out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth on two extra-base hits and a pair of RBI singles. Senior Jordan Hovey (Edwardsville, Ill.) launched a one-out triple to right-center to get things going, then junior Jason Allbery (Omaha, Neb.) delivered the first run of the game with a double down the left field line. Freshman Jared Wegner (Kearney, Neb.) and junior Isaac Collins (Maple Grove, Minn.) followed with RBI singles to give Creighton a 3-0 edge.

Wichita State answered with a run in the fourth, but Creighton pushed the lead back to three with a tally in the sixth. The Bluejays got rolling in the frame with another one-out extra-base knock as Wegner doubled to left. Collins and junior Parker Upton (Grand Island, Neb.) drew walks, then junior Will Robertson (Loose Creek, Mo.) was hit by a pitch to make it 4-1. The inning, however, was cut short by a double play.

The momentum of halting Creighton's surge helped Wichita State take the lead with four runs on two hits, two hit batters and a walk in the bottom of the sixth.

Creighton rallied in the ninth as Collins slapped an RBI single up the middle, yet the Bluejays left the tying runs in scoring position as Upton was called out on strikes.

Blluejay reliever Ryan Connolly (Castle Rock, Colo.) suffered the loss (0-1), allowing one run on two hits in 1.1 innings. Wichita State reliever Cal Carver earned the win (2-0) limiting Creighton tow one run on three hits in two innings of relief. Shocker closer Mitchell Walters earned his second save of the season, allowing one run on two hits in the ninth.

Collins led the offense with a 3-for-5 day at the dish, closing with two RBI.

Creighton and Wichita State will wrap up a series shortened to the doubleheader today by poor weather conditions forecast for Saturday and Sunday.
