Women's Basketball Closes Season with 80-69 Loss to DePaul in BIG EAST Semifinals

Chicago, Ill. -- The Creighton women's basketball team showed tremendous fight against the second-seed DePaul on Monday, March 11, yet the Bluejays fell to the Blue Demons 80-69 in the BIG EAST semifinals.
The loss ended Creighton's season as the Bluejays fell to 15-16, while DePaul advanced to the tournament championship with a 25-7 mark.
Jaylyn Agnew led Creighton with a season-high 27 points, while the Blue Demons got 20 points from Mart'E Grays and 12 each from Chante Stonewall and Ashton Millender.
Agnew got started early with seven first quarter points, hitting one from beyond the arc and dropping in a pair of layups. The Bluejays also got five from sophomore Temi Carda in the frame, yet Creighton trailed 19-17 after one quarter.
Down 24-20 early in the second, Agnew knocked down a trey, then delivered a short jumper in the paint to put Creighton up 25-24 (7:21). The two teams exchanged buckets ove the next five minutes, but DePaul hit a trey with 45 seconds left in the half to take a 41-37 edge into the locker rooms.
The latter part of the third quarter was Creighton's turn to surge. Trailing 49-44 with 4:15 left in the period, the Bluejays scored ten straight to burst out to a 54-49 lead with 2:23 left on the clock. Freshman Rachael Saunders started Creighton's push with a three-ball from the left corner, then Agnew connected from well beyond the arc to put Creighton up 50-49. Two more buckets from Agnew pushed the Bluejays out to their largest lead, yet DePaul answered with the final six points of the third to hold a 55-54 lead heading to the final ten minutes.
Knotted at 58-58 with just under seven minutes remaining, DePaul seized control of the game with an 8-0 run to lead 66-58 (5:24). The Bluejays cut the deficit two five twice in the closing minutes, but were unable to completely recover.
