Bluejays won at all three doubles positions and in straight-sets at three singles slots
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Creighton men's tennis team used a strong doubles showing to propel towards a 5-2 victory against Saint Joseph's on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Florida.
The Bluejays improved to 5-7 with the win, while the Hawks fell to 1-6.
Creighton won at all three doubles positions to claim the doubles point. Mac Mease and Nick Campbell won 6-2 at the top spot, Daniel Lopez-Rey and Jose Oscar Diaz combined for a 6-3 win at No. 3 and Stratton Brown and Joe Hoff teamed up for a 6-4 victory at the No. 2 doubles position.
The Bluejays sealed the overall match with straight-sets wins at the No. 3, 4 and 6 singles slots. Diaz opened the action without losing a game during the No. 4 match, Mease followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 and Armando Gandini clinched the dual with his 6-4. 6-2 victory in the fourth slot.
The final three singles matches each went three sets, with SJU earning wins in two of the three. Campbell proved to be the lone Bluejay to pull off a three-set win during the No. 1 singles match. The freshman claimed the first set 6-3, fell in the second by a similar score of 6-3 and won 10-8 in a 10-point tiebreaker. Lopez-Rey bounced back from a first set loss with a 6-3 win in the second frame and narrowly dropped the 10-point breaker, 10-8 at No. 5. Brown closed out the action with a tightly contest match at the No. 2 position. The sophomore won 7-5 in the opening frame, fell 7-6 in the second and was outlasted 10-6 in the deciding tiebreaker.
"We played some great doubles today and I hope we can play with that energy and aggressiveness tomorrow," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We will need to rest tonight and play well against Xavier tomorrow as it should be a great collegiate match at the USTA center."
The Bluejays and Musketeers are scheduled to take the courts at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
