ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Creighton women's tennis team concluded its spring break trip to Orlando with a 6-1 loss to Xavier on Thursday at the USTA National Campus.
The Bluejays ended their week at 1-2 during three matches against BIG EAST opponents and moved their overall dual record to 4-9. The Musketeers improved to 12-2 overall this spring and 3-0 in league competition.
Xavier opened the action on Thursday with wins at the bottom two doubles position for the first point. The Musketeers started the day with a 6-1 win at No. 2, but the Bluejays responded with a 6-2 win at the top position by Ashley Ishimura and Sarah Wilcox. Xavier ended doubles play with a 6-3 victory at the No. 3 slot.
The Musketeers sealed the dual with straight-sets victories in four of the six singles matches.
Creighton's lone win in singles play came during the No. 6 match. Gabby O'Connor won in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-4 for her fourth singles victory during the spring season.
Thursday's action ended with a tightly contested No. 1 singles match. Ishimura earned a 6-2 win in the first set but fell 6-3 during the second. Xavier secured its sixth point of the day with a 10-8 win during a deciding 10-point tiebreaker.
"We played a very good Xavier team and one that has already beaten several conference teams," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We need to get better at adding more variety at times and we will work on that back in Omaha.
"This (trip) was a good experience playing outside in the elements for the first time this week."
Creighton returns to the courts for a home match against Utah State on March 22 at 6 p.m.
