OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team fell 4-0 to Marquette during the Bluejays' home opener on Saturday morning at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
Creighton moved its spring schedule record to 2-7, while the Golden Eagles improved to 7-4.
Saturday's contest marked the Bluejays' first home match of the season after playing their first eight of 2019 on the road.
Marquette opened action with wins at the top and bottom doubles positions. A 6-2 win at the No. 1 slot preceded a 6-4 victory at No. 3 to secure the first point of the dual.
The Golden Eagles ended the match with three straight-sets victories (3, 4 and 5 positions) during singles play.
Creighton forced a third set at both of the top two positions before play ended. Ashley Ishimura fell 6-2 in her first set at No. 1 and bounced back for a 7-6 (7-3) win in the second frame. Sarah Wilcox took a 1-0 edge during the No. 2 match with an opening-set 6-4 victory, but dropped the second frame. Ishimura and Wilcox were each caught in tight third-set battles before Marquette clinched the team victory. Wilcox competed in her third consecutive three-set match that went unfinished.
"We are getting better," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We had opportunities in doubles and singles matches. Credit to Marquette for being the better team today.
"We are expecting a great match tomorrow."
Creighton returns to the courts for a home match on Sunday against Chicago State.
