OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team won three consecutive singles matches but fell to Utah State 4-3 on Friday night at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays moved their record to 4-10, while the Aggies improved to 8-7.
Creighton started doubles play with a 6-1 win from Erin Epperson and Gabby O'Connor at the No. 3 position. Utah State evened the early action with a 6-2 win at the top slot and earned the doubles point following a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position.
The Aggies continued to control the match with straight-sets singles wins at the No. 1 and 3 singles spots and gained a 3-0 edge before Creighton rallied to tie the dual.
Sarah Wilcox earned her team-leading sixth singles victory at the No. 2 position with a 6-2, 7-6 win for the Bluejays' first point. Epperson claimed Creighton's second victory with a 7-6, 7-5 at the No. 4 slot.
Friday's match ended with three-set matches at the No. 5 and 6 positions.
O'Connor tied the overall dual with her 6-4 victory in the third set at No. 6. The Bluejay freshman fell 6-0 in the opening frame before winning 6-4 in the second to force a deciding set.
The final match wrapped up in a third-set tiebreaker. Claire Embree opened the No. 5 singles contest with a 6-2 win but fell 6-0 in the second set. The deciding frame went to a tiebreaker before Utah State won 7-4 to secure the overall match.
"Our girls fought very hard throughout the lineup and we just came up a little short," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Utah State is a very good team and was coming off three big wins. We gave them everything we had and if we compete like that the rest of the year, we will end very strong."
Creighton returns to the courts on Sunday for a home match against North Dakota on Sunday at 11 a.m.
