Women's Tennis Wins Doubles Point, Unable To Keep Pace With UMKC In Singles During 5-2 Setback

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Creighton women's tennis team won the doubles point but fell 5-2 overall against UMKC on Tuesday afternoon at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Bluejays moved to 5-11 with the loss, while the Kangaroos improved to 4-10.
Creighton earned the first point of the match with identical 6-3 wins at the No. 1 and 3 doubles positions. Ashley Ishimura and Sarah Wilcox improved to 8-6 at the top spot, while Erin Epperson and Gabby O'Connor improved to 4-2 as a doubles pair.
All six singles matches were decided in straight-sets as UMKC won at five of the positions.
O'Connor's 6-4, 7-5 victory in the No. 6 position proved to be Creighton's lone singles victory. Epperson forced a tiebreaker in the first set at No. 4 and Wilcox dropped a 7-5 decision in the second set at No.2, but the Kangaroos controlled the majority of the singles action.
"We played some good doubles and are getting better there," head coach Tom Lilly said. "I'm disappointed that we just don't have the fight and grit at some spots right now. We clearly have talent and just not enough grit that really good tennis teams have. We need to toughen up and fight harder from here on out."
Creighton is back in action on April 3 for a match against South Dakota in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
