Sam Alm delivers walk-off hit, Kiele Miller authors 3-hit shutout
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team swept a BIG EAST doubleheader against Butler on Friday at the Creighton Sports Complex. The Bluejays earned a 3-0 victory in the first game and a walk-off 4-3 win during the second.
The Bluejays improved to 5-9 in BIG EAST play and 17-18 overall, while the Bulldogs fell to 14-27 overall and 2-8 during league games. The pair of victories also extended Creighton's winning streak to a season-high five games.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, freshman Sam Alm singled to the Butler shortstop and Kristin Fry crossed home plate as the Creighton walked-off with a 4-3 victory during game two of the doubleheader.
Ashley Cantu led off the seventh inning with her third walk of the game and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Jayci Foster -- Foster's fourth sacrifice of the day. Kailey Wilson came on to pinch-hit with one out and beat out a single after tapping the ball in front of the plate. Mileah McKelvy was intentionally walked to load the bases and Butler recorded the second out of the inning on a fielder's choice at home plate to erase Cantu. Alm worked a 2-2 count before providing the heroics with an infield single to the left side of the diamond.
Neither team scored during the first two innings of the second game of the day before Creighton broke into the run column during the third. Foster delivered a double down the left-field line to drive in two runs as the first four hitters of the third reached safely. Victoria Alvarez singled, Sydney Jenkins walked and Cantu tallied an infield single down the third-base line before Foster's fourth double of the season.
Butler tied the game at 2-2 with a two-RBI double of its own during the fifth, but the Bluejays countered with one run in the bottom of the fourth because of two errors. Alm led off the inning with a single and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch. Following a strikeout, Jenkins sent a high-chopper down to the Butler third baseman who fielded the ball and fired it to first base. The speedy junior beat out the throw but the first baseman dropped ball before throwing a one-hopper past the catcher to allow Alm to score and send Jenkins to second.Â
The visiting Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the seventh. A lead-off walk and two-out RBI double down the left-field line tied the game at 3-3. Laura Roecker stranded the go-ahead run at second base with a ground out to short and her fifth strikeout of the game to allow Creighton to walk-off as victors during the last of the seventh.
Roecker recorded her team-leading eighth victory of the season, while allowing seven hits and three runs and walking three to go along with her five strikeouts.Â
Alm matched her career-high with three hits, while six other Bluejays tallied exactly one. Cantu became the third different Creighton player to walk three times during a single game this season.Â
Kiele Miller authored a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in a 3-0 win over Butler in game one of the day.
Creighton scored the game's first run in the fourth inning thanks to a pair of Butler errors. Cantu reached second on a dropped fly ball and later came around to score when Foster's sacrifice bunt was thrown away.Â
The Jays plated two insurance runs in the sixth inning against Butler ace Alyssa Graves. Alm notched CU's first hit of the day with a double to left-center, was bunted to third by Cantu, and scored on a squeeze bunt by Foster. Fry later scored on McKelvy's single to make it 3-0.
Miller was dominant in the circle, striking out at least one batter in every inning en route to her third shutout of the season, and fourth of her career. She yielded three hits and two walks in her 131-pitch complete game effort. It was the seventh game of the sophomore's career with 10 or more strikeouts.
Creighton and Butler will conclude their three-game conference series on Saturday at 11 a.m.
