Bluejay Baseball Battles Mavericks on Wednesday

Omaha, Neb. -- Both teams will enter Werner Park on Wednesday, April 3 with a ton of momentum as UNO has won 13 of 14, while Creighton has won seven of eight. Once the inter-city fisticuffs conclude the Bluejays host their last non-conference weekend series against Kansas State in TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.

Scouting the Bluejays (2019: 14-6, 0-0 BIG EAST)
Creighton enters the first week of April with seven wins in its last eight games, including a weekend sweep of Illinois State in the Bluejays' first weekend at home. The Bluejay offense has shouldered the bulk of the load for Creighton through much of the first half of the year. Despite playing in the spacious home of TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, the bats didn't stop for Creighton. The Bluejays hammered three home runs on Friday against Illinois State, with junior Jake Holton hitting one into the seats in each of Creighton's weekend battles with the Redbirds.
Holton leads Creighton at the plate with a .372 average, eight home runs and 28 RBI. Two-hole hitter Parker Upton is a step back at .347, while leadoff man Isaac Collins enters the week hitting .333.
On the mound closer Bobby Kametas has been strong in nine appearances with a 1.93 ERA, while reliever John Sakowski was stellar in two appearances last week. Sakowski authored 6.2 innings of scoreless ball, earning the win over the Redbirds in the opening game of a twin bill on Sunday.
Series History: Creighton leads Omaha, 54-30
The Bluejays hold a 54-30 series edge over the Mavericks and are 9-3 against UNO under head coach Ed Servais. The Bluejays took all three meetings last season, pushing Creighton's win streak against Omaha to six games. The last UNO win came on April 22, 2014.
Scouting the Mavericks (2019: 17-6-1, 9-0 MVC)
Just as Creighton enters the midweek game with a ton of confidence, the Mavericks swept a weekend series from Western Illinois and have won 13 of 14 games.
The Mavericks come into Wedenesday hitting .285 as a team, led by four players over .300. The leader at the dish is Parker Smejkal, hitting .362, while Keil Krumwiedge enters the game at .337.
On the mound, however, UNO has a team ERA of 4.01.
Wednesday's projected starter Jackson Gordon is one three hurlers with multiple saves this season. Wednesday, however, would be his first start of the season.
Series History: Creighton trails Kasnas State, 52-41-1
Creighton's weekend series with the Wildcats continues an annual matchup with Kansas State, but this is the first time the two squads will play a weekend series since Servais has led the Bluejays. Creighton and Kansas State have typically played a home-and-home midweek game. Under Servais Creighton is 12-8 against the Wildcats, taking the last three meetings.
Scouting the Wildcats (2019: 12-16, 1-5 Big 12)
Kansas State has a pair of midweek games scheduled prior to facing the Bluejays, but the Wildcats enter the week having dropped six of their last seven.
The Wildcats are hitting .271 as a team, led by Zach Kokoska at .348 and Will Brennan at .324.
On the bump Kansas State has a 5.16 team ERA, yet their closer Mitch Zubradt has a 0.00 ERA in 12 appearances.
Holton Claims Second BIG EAST Player of the Week, Sakowski Earns Honor Roll
Creighton junior Jake Holton capped the Bluejays' weekend sweep of Illinois State by earning the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Tuesday, April 2. In four contests at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha last week, Holton reached the seats in each game versus the Redbirds. Holton went 7-for-17 (.412) for the week with 10 RBI on three home runs, two doubles for 18 total bases.
While Holton was holding court at the dish, Bluejay junior John Sakowski was equally impressive on the mound. The Omaha native tossed a career-high 3.2 innings against Creighton rival Nebraska on March 26th out of the bullpen, then returned to the bump on Sunday with three innings of scoreless ball against Illinois State to collect the win in the opening game of the doubleheader on Sunday.
