The Bluejays and Blue Demons started their match on Friday but did not finish until Saturday morning
CAYCE, S.C. -- The Creighton men's tennis team concluded its season with a 4-1 loss against fourth-seeded DePaul on Saturday morning during the 2019 BIG EAST Tennis Championship quarterfinal round at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
The Bluejays and Blue Demons started their match on Friday morning but play was suspended because of heavy rain. The two teams resumed and ended action on Saturday morning.
Creighton wrapped up its season at 9-10.
The Bluejays started play on Friday by claiming the doubles point. Nick Campbell and Mac Mease combined for a 6-1 victory at the top spot before Daniel Lopez-Rey and Jose Oscar Diaz secured the first point of the match with a 6-3 win.
DePaul started singles action with straight-sets wins at the No. 1, 4 and 5 positions before conditions became unplayable on Friday.
The Blue Demons earned their fourth victory of the dual by finishing off a three-set match at the No. 3 position on Saturday. Armando Gandini won 6-3 in the first set but fell 6-2 in the second and dropped a 6-3 decision in the deciding third set.
Creighton forced three sets at both the No. 2 and No. 6 positions, but both matches went unfinished. Stratton Brown (No. 2) and Daniel Lopez-Rey (No. 6) each claimed 6-4 second-set wins to force third frames.
"We gave it all we had and the match could have gone either way," head coach Tom Lilly said. "DePaul was just better in four of the singles matches.
"We have a great group returning next season and I like the way we competed and played during the second half of the year."
