Bluejays lead the Blue Demons 7-4 in the bottom of the 5th with one out and two runners on
CHICAGO -- The Creighton softball team suspended its BIG EAST series opener against DePaul on Saturday morning during the bottom of the fifth inning because of rain and snow causing unplayable conditions at Cacciatore Stadium in Chicago. Snow is forecasted to continue in Chicago throughout the afternoon and evening hours of Saturday.Â
The first game of the three-game series will resume on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with the Bluejays leading the Blue Demons, 7-4. DePaul will restart the action with runners at first and second base, one out and a 1-1 count to designated player Gabby O'Riley in the bottom of the fifth.
Following the conclusion of the suspended game, Creighton and DePaul will play a doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m. (as scheduled) to wrap-up the weekend series.Â
Creighton jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Saturday morning with a five-run second inning. Sam Alm started the scoring on a sacrifice bunt attempt. With runners at first and second base, Alm bunted the ball towards the pitching circle where the DePaul pitcher picked up the ball and tossed it past the Blue Demon first baseman, allowing pinch-runner Courtney Sandell to score from second base. Pinch-hitter Sydney Jenkins delivered a RBI single through the middle to drive in Creighton's second run of the game before Ashley Cantu produced a RBI ground out. Mileah McKelvy capped the scoring with a two-out two-RBI single through the middle of the diamond as the Bluejays gained a 5-0 edge.
The host Blue Demons scored twice in the bottom of the second but Creighton countered with RBI doubles during both the third and fourth innings. Kaitlynn Hunt produced her first double as a Bluejay to drive in Kelli Finan during the third and Kailey Wilson hit a double off the left-field wall in the fourth to plate Kiara Mills and give Creighton a 7-2 lead.
DePaul hit a two-run homer and tallied consecutive walks in the bottom of the fifth as the rain and snow intensified before play was suspended.
