Women's Tennis Claims Wednesday Afternoon 6-1 Victory Against South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Creighton women's tennis team claimed a 6-1 victory over South Dakota on Wednesday afternoon at Huether Family Match Pointe in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Wednesday's match marked the Bluejays' final regular-season match away from Omaha.
Creighton improved to 6-11 this spring, while the Coyotes fell to 7-8.
The Bluejays secured the first point of the day with doubles victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Erin Epperson and Gabby O'Connor combined for a 6-1 win in the No. 2 slot, while Michaela Henne and Claire Embree clinched the opening point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
Four of the the six singles matches went three sets as Creighton earned a trio of three-set victories against the Coyotes.
O'Connor's three-set victory at the No. 5 singles position sealed the dual for the Bluejays. The freshman dropped the first set before battling back for a 6-3 victory in the second and did not drop a game during the deciding third set.
Epperson and Meredith Benson also earned three-set wins. Epperson fell 6-2 in the first set at No. 4 but responded with 7-5 and 6-1 wins in the final two frames. Benson outlasted her opponent at No. 6 with a tiebreaker win the opening set but fell 6-4 in the second. The Sioux Falls, South Dakota native earned Creighton's sixth victory of the day without losing a game in the final frame.
Sarah Wilcox and Henne won in straight-sets for the Bluejays' first two singles victories. Wilcox won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 and Henne earned a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory at No. 3.
South Dakota's lone victory came during a three-set match at the top position.
"We had to fight hard today as South Dakota is well coached, and they battled well," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Our team stepped up today in big moments and, more importantly, when things were not going our way. Our players adapting and competing was what won the match today."
Creighton returns to the courts on Saturday morning against Nebraska-Omaha. The Bluejays will play the Mavericks at the Westside High School Tennis Courts at 11 a.m.
