Bluejays scored during all five innings, including five times in first frame
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team run-ruled Nebraska, 9-1, on Tuesday night at the Creighton Sports Complex. Tuesday's victory marked the Bluejays' first against the Huskers since their 2-1 win on April 25, 2012.Â
Creighton improved to 12-17 this season and snapped a six-game losing streak, while Nebraska fell to 13-23.Â
The Bluejays also run-ruled their in-state rivals for the first time since April 9, 2008 (13-1).
Creighton fell behind early as Nebraska scored once with a RBI double in the top of the first before the Bluejays scored nine unanswered runs, including five in the bottom of the first.
Ashley Cantu led off the home half of the opening frame with a home run over the left-field wall for her second lead-off homer of the season. Jayci Foster followed Cantu with a single before Kiara Mills lifted her team-leading sixth homer of the season over the right-field wall and gave Creighton a 3-1 edge. Mileah McKelvy walked and Mikaela Pechar launched a line shot over the center-field wall for the Bluejays' third home run of the opening frame as the Bluejays gained a 5-1 lead. Creighton sent 10 hitters to the plate during the first inning.
Bluejay starting pitcher Laura Roecker sat down the Cornhuskers in order during the second before Kelli Finan delivered a two-out homer to left field in the bottom of the second for her fourth of the season and Creighton's fourth of the game.
Nebraska loaded the bases during the third but Roecker tallied a strikeout to end the inning without allowing a run.
Creighton extended their advantage to six runs, 7-1, with a run in the third. With Victoria Alvarez at first after a walk, Cantu sent a single into left field that the Husker outfielder could not corral and Alvarez scored all the way from first without a play.
Roecker recorded her third and fourth strikeouts of the game in the fourth frame as the Huskers went down in order.
The Bluejays led by eight runs after four innings after RBI singles by McKelvy and Pechar.Â
Nebraska threatened to extend the game with a lead-off single in the fifth, but Roecker answered the call and stranded runners at the corners to end the game. The Cornhuskers left seven runners on base during Tuesday's contest.
Roecker allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking only one during the five-inning complete game.Â
Pechar finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and her third home run of the season, while Cantu, Mills and Finan also each finished 2-for-3 as the Bluejays tallied 10 hits.Â
Creighton is back in action and resumes conference play this weekend on the road against Villanova. The Bluejays and Wildcats will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. Central before playing one on Sunday at 10 a.m.
