Bosak and Legband Deliver Game-Winning Goal
Omaha, Neb. -- Seniors Jaylin Bosak and Cassie Legband gave Creighton a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute, then a pair of one-on-one saves from sophomore goalkeeper Katie Sullivan preserved a 1-0 win for the Bluejay women's soccer team over South Dakota State on Thursday, Aug. 29.
The win moved the Bluejays to 2-0-0 on the season, while South Dakota State fell to 2-1-0, giving up its first goal of 2019.
A wild second half saw the intensity raised in the 60th minute as Jackrabbit Karlee Manding was issued a direct red card for a dangerous play involving Bluejay senior Taryn Jakubowski. The man advantage paid dividends for Creighton in the 74th minute as sophomore Ansley Atkinson fired a shot from 30 yards away on target, forcing South Dakota State goalkeeper Maggie Smith to block in over the goal.
The resulting corner kick was sent to the box by Atkinson to Bosak. The senior defender sent a shot into the net, but Smither denied Creighton once more. The rebound was gathered by Legband and touched back to Bosak for the goal with 73:40 showing on the clock.
With just over 15 minutes remaining, Creighton tried to keep possession and run out the clock, but the Jackrabbits had other ideas. In the 81st minute South Dakota State intercepted a Creighton pass on the Jackrabbits offensive third, then a through pass setup Maya Hansen for a one-on-one chance along the left side of the box. Sullivan forced Hansen to make a decision and stopped her shot, after the rebound returned to Hansen the Bluejay defense recovered to clear the ball.
South Dakota State created two final chances in the closing minutes as a yellow card on Bosak gave the Jackrabbits a free kick from 25 yards out. South Dakota State brought Smith out of its goal for the free kick, but her shot landed safely in the arms of Sullivan.
Finally with just 16 seconds remaining in regulation Hansen got another one-on-one chance along the left corner of the box. This time the Jackrabbit forward sent the ball toward the post. Sullivan dived to the right and made a kick save to preserve her first shutout of the season.
A very physical first half produced a 0-0 score as Creighton fired off 10 shots and the Jackrabbits delivered just three.
Creighton out shot South Dakota State 27-7 in the win, also holding a 3-2 edge in corners.
