Strong Singles Showing Highlights Women's Tennis' First Day At Drake Invitational

Bluejays ended the first day 6-2 in singles action
DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Creighton women's tennis team earned six victories in singles action (6-2) to open its fall season on Friday in the Drake Invitational at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The Bluejays started the day with a 3-4 showing during doubles play. In Flight A, Sarah Wilcox and Erin Epperson teamed up for an 8-5 opening-round victory, while Gabby O'Connor and Meredith Benson claimed a similar 8-5 win during first round action in Flight B.
Julia Aguirre and Laura Higueras earned Creighton's third victory of the day in the consolation side of the Flight B bracket. Aguirre and Higueras outlasted the opposition from Nebraska-Omaha in a tiebreaker to advance to a consolation semifinal match on Saturday morning.
Freshmen Kate Krueger and Emma Gener each recorded their first collegiate victories during singles action. Both women tallied straight-sets victories in the Flight A bracket as Krueger did not lose a game and Gener only dropped one during each frame.Â
Four other Bluejays also advanced to winner's brackets without losing a set. Wilcox joined Krueger and Gener in the Flight A winner's bracket, while Gabby O'Connor advanced in Flight B. Aguirre came back from a break down in the first set to win during a breaker and battled for a 6-4 win in the second set in Flight C. Higueras advanced in Flight D.
Benson fought through a three-set match in Flight C. The Bluejay sophomore started the match with a 6-4 win before falling during the final two sets.Â
Action at the Drake Invitational continues on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
