Late Goal from Grubb Propels Bluejays to 2-1 Win at Kansas City

Rothwell Scores Her First Goal in 45th Minute
Kansas City, Mo. -- Goals in the final five minutes of each half lifted the Creighton women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Kansas City on Tuesday, Sept. 17th in the Bluejays first road match of the season.
The win lifted Creighton to 6-1-0 on the season, while Kansas City fell to 5-1-2.
Both teams were took some time feeling one another out early in the match. The Roos offense created a pair of corners in the opening six minutes, but both shots were blocked by Creighton's back line.
Kansas City fired off two more shots, both coming from Rylan Childers in the 12th and 15th minutes, but a Bluejay block and a save from freshman Keelan Terrell kept it 0-0.
Creighton first scoring chance came in the 16th minute as sophomore Ansley Atkinson and senior Taryn Jakubowski each sent a ball towards the Roos net.
The match appeared to heading to halftime scoreless until a foul against Kansas City with 35 seconds left in the period gave Creighton one more scoring chance.
Following a free kick off the foot of Atkinson that was blocked, freshman Jordy Rothwell made the most of the opportunity by connecting on her first goal of the season, sending Creighton into the locker room up 1-0.
The Bluejays controlled possession for the bulk of the latter portion of the opening half and limited Kansas City to just four shots in the second half, but the Roos found the equalizer in the 75th minute as Carly Janike connected with a ball to the top left corner fro over 30 yards to knot the match at 1-1.
With under five minutes remaining in regulation senior Kylin Grubb lifted her squad to a 2-1 lead, taking a crossing pass from Atkinson and blasting it with her right foot into the bottom left corner of the net.
Creighton held a 14-12 edge in shots, with both teams getting eight off in the opening session.
The Bluejays travel home this evening, then fly out to Florida on Thursday as the Bluejays face Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, Sept. 20th, the (RV) Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Sept. 22nd.
