Espeleta's Goal In 86th Minute Propels Men's Soccer To 1-0 Win At Marquette, First BIG EAST Victory

Friday marked Creighton's first BIG EAST victory of the season
OMAHA, Neb. -- Daniel Espeleta found the back of the net during the 86th minute to help the Creighton men's soccer team earn a 1-0 victory over Marquette on Friday night in Milwaukee during the BIG EAST opener for both squads.
Espeleta received a pass near the middle of the 18-yard box from Younes Boudadi before sending the ball past the Marquette goalkeeper for the sophomore's first career goal. Dominic Briggs also earned an assist on the play with a pass down the right side of the box to Boudadi before the cross to Espeleta.Â
Creighton improved to 1-0-0 in league play and 4-2-1 overall, while the Golden Eagles fell to 0-1-0 in league action and 2-3-1 overall.Â
Senior goalkeeper Collin Valdivia tallied a career-high eight saves to preserve the clean sheet and record his first career shutout. Friday night also marked Creighton's first shutout during the 2019 season.Â
Valdivia made three saves during the opening 45 minutes before making five in the second stanza. The senior made an impressive kick save with his left foot during the 73rd minute to keep Marquette off the scoreboard.
Luke Haakenson fired a pair of his team-high six shots during 81st minute and Espeleta fired one on frame about a minute later as the Bluejays continued to apply pressure before finding the back of the net during the 86th minute.Â
Creighton ended the match with a slight 18-17 advantage in shots, but Marquette ended the night with a 7-2 edge in corner kicks and 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.Â
The Bluejays return to Morrison Stadium for a nonconference match on Tuesday night against Tulsa. First touch between the Bluejays and Golden Hurricane is scheduled for 7 p.m.Â
