Brookings, S.D. -- Despite a fast start that saw the Bluejays seize an early 10-4 edge, the Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 66-47 defeat to South Dakota State on Monday, Nov. 30.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 0-3 on the season, while SDSU climbed to 2-0.
Senior Temi Carda got Creighton rolling early with seven points in the first five minutes, helping Creighton build it's 10-4 edge. The Bluejays were 4-of-7 (57.1) from the field to open the game and held a 12-10 edge heading into the second quarter.
As hold as the Bluejays were to start the game, Creighton was just 3-of-15 (20%) in the second, while the Jackrabbits found their shooting touch. South Dakota State closed the half with a 13-0 surge to take a 32-21 advantage into halftime.
Early in the third quarter SDSU pushed its lead out to as much as 19 (40-21) at the 7:38 mark and once more with 3:20 left in the third at 45-26. A quick 5-0 run for the Bluejays courtesy of two free throws by Carda and a three-ball from freshman Emma Ronsiek gave Creighton some life as the Bluejays trailed 48-35 heading to the fourth.
Ronsiek connected from long range once more to open the final quarter, brining Creighton within 10 at 48-38. Moments later Ronsiek delivered her third trey of the contest, cutting the deficit to single-digits at 52-45 (6:46). A bucket from fellow freshman Mallory Brake got the Bluejays as close as the squad had been since the second quarter (52-47), but the Jackrabbits closed the game on a 14-0 run.
Carda led the way with a game-high 17 points, while Ronsiek finished with 15. South Dakota State got 17 points from Myah Selland and 13 from Paiton Burckhard.
Creighton returns to the court on Friday, Dec. 4 as the Bluejays begin BIG EAST play at Xavier. The game is scheduled to tip off at 5:00 pm (CT).
