Scouting Xavier (4-3, 1-2 BIG EAST)
After opening the season 3-0 with victories over Detroit-Mercy, Wofford and Indiana State, Xavier dropped contests to Valparaiso, #3 Connecticut and Marquette.
The Musketeers are led by freshman transfer (Miami (Ohio)) Nia Clark, who is averaging 15.2 ppg and senior A'riana Gray with 12.7 ppg. However, neither Clark nor Gray were available (Covid-Contact Tracing) in the Musketeers win over Providence on New Years Eve.
Xavier will try to push tempo and force turnovers against the Bluejays, averaging 18.7 created per game. The Musketeers are just under 12 steals per contest (11.8), but have struggled defensively when they are unable to swipe the rock. Allowing opponents to shoot 46.6% from the field.
Scouting Creighton (2-6, 1-3 BIG EAST)
The Bluejays are hoping to get back on a win streak, after suffering its second three-game skid.
Forced to play its first three games without senior point guard Tatum Rembao the Bluejays offense was sluggish in three consecutive losses, averaging 53.7 ppg)
Rembao's return led to a pair of impressive victories over Butler (88-41) and Nebraska (78-62).
Since the win over the Huskers the Bluejays have faced #3 Connecticut, an undefeated Villanova squad and #18 DePaul.
Creighton has steadily improved during the last three games, pushing #18 DePaul in the final moments. Against the Blue Demons, freshman Emma Ronsiek had a coming out party with 28 points, 10 rebounds, hitting 13-of-15 from the field.
Keys To the Game on Sunday, Jan. 3
One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
In Creighton's loss to #3 Connecticut on Dec. 17, the Bluejays lost three starters (Carly Bachelor, Rachael Saunders and Mykel Parham) to injuries during the contest.
While none of the trio played at Villanova (Dec. 19) nor versus #18 DePaul (Dec. 22), Parham is expected to be back on the floor in the battle at Xavier.
Unfortunately the update is not as good for Bachelor or Saunders.
Bachelor suffered a broken bone in her shooting hand and is not expected back until February at the earliest.
Saunders, meanwhile, will not return this season after suffering an injury to the meniscus in her left knee. Saunders has undergone successful surgery and will return to the Bluejays next season.
Ronsiek Claims BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Creighton freshman Emma Ronsiek's delivered career-highs in points (28) and rebounds (10) to collect her first double-double against No. 18 DePaul on Tuesday, Dec. 22. The performance earned the South Dakota native the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honor on Monday, Dec. 28.
Ronsiek posted the most points and rebounds by a BIG EAST rookie in a game this season, closing the game 13-of-15 from the field, including 2-of-3 from deep.
Something About DePaul
During Jim Flanery's tenure at the helm for Creighton, the Bluejays have shot 50 percent or more in 64 contests. Creighton has won 60 of those games, with the last three losses coming to DePaul. This season the Bluejays fell to #18 DePaul at home by the score of 90-81, despite shooting 52.3% from the field (34-of-65). DePaul, however, finished 38-of-63 (60.3%), including 14-of-16 (87.5%) in the fourth quarter.

Senior Tatum Rembao was in more than a giving mood in the Bluejays battle with #18 DePaul on Dec. 22, racking up a career-high 14 assists.
That total ranks second in Creighton single-game history, one short of Becky Strathman's 15 assists against San Diego State on Feb. 1, 1992. It also set a D.J. Sokol Arena record, breaking Sydney Lamberty's mark of 11 assists against Providence on Jan. 13, 2018. Rembao's total is the most in a BIG EAST game since 2010, when St. John's Nadirah McKenith dished 14 assists against Pittsburgh on March 1, 2010.
