About Seton Hall
Seton Hall is one of the most talented teams in the BIG EAST, pushing #4 Connecticut to the fourth quarter earlier this season. The Pirates have battled through injuries to senior leader Shadeen Samuela and feature one of the top back courts in the conference.
The Pirates blitzed Creighton in the first meeting as Seton Hall opened the game on a 19-2 run, hitting their first six shots from long range and seven in the opening quarter alone.
Scouting Creighton (15-9, 7-6 BIG EAST)
The Bluejays have been an evolving team throughout the 2019-20 season. During the non-conference portion of the season the Bluejays relied on their defense and toughness to win close games. Injuries to point guard Tatum Rembao, sophomore reserve Rachael Saunders and senior Jaylyn Agnew forced the Bluejay to ask freshman Carly Bachelor, junior Temi Carda and senior Olivia Elger to should a larger role.
While Rembao and Elger continue to battle balky injuries, the Bluejays are as close to healthy as they are likely to be. Friday's loss to St. John's illuminated a need to refocus on defense as Creighton allowed an opponent to top 75 points for just the third time.
Offensively Jaylyn Agnew was limited to seven points against the Red Storm, yet delivered an impressive 38-point effort the previous contest at Providence.
One thing to remember is the Bluejays have dropped back-to-back games just once this season, but it was to Seton Hall and St. John's in January.
First Meeting with the Pirates: Jan. 17, 2020
Seton Hall 82, Creighton 70
Down 32-14 after one quarter, the Creighton women's basketball team rallied back within single digits in the fourth quarter before falling to Seton Hall 82-70 on Friday, Jan. 17th.
The Pirates came out of the gate simply red hot as Seton Hall hit 8-of-10 from the field and went 6-for-6 from long range in the opening five minutes to storm out to a 22-4 edge (4:52). Conversely the Bluejays didn't find their range from beyond the arc until the closing moments of the half as Creighton went into halftime down 48-27.
Following the break the Bluejays picked up their scoring, putting up 20 in the third, but Seton Hall remained hot from the field shooting 8-of-12 (66.7%). Despite the Pirates' torrid shooting, Creighton won the frame 20-16 led by eight points in the quarter from senior Jaylyn Agnew, heading into the fourth down 64-47.
Agnew opened the fourth with her second trifecta of the game to make it 64-50 (9:39), but neither team scored again until the 6:54 mark. Trailing 70-53 with 4:18 left, the Bluejays clawed back within single digits at 78-70 with a 17-8 run over the next three minutes. Sophomore Rachael Saunders knocked down a pair of three-pointers during the run, capped by a driving jumper from Agnew with 1:23 remaining.
Creighton's comeback bid simply ran out of time as Seton Hall connected on four free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
