Seattle, Wash. -- Trailing 4-3 heading into the ninth inning, Creighton Baseball plated two runs in the final frame to claim a 5-4 win in the game and also take the series from Seattle University on Sunday, Feb. 16th.
The win pushed the Bluejay record to 2-1 on the season, while Seattle dropped to 1-2.
Creighton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as junior Will Hanafan walked, took second on a passed ball, then moved around the diamond via a pair of grounders to the right side.
Seattle responded with a run of its own in the bottom half, getting a leadoff walk, a double and an RBI ground out.
The Bluejay offense went back to work with a pair of runs in the third. Junior David Vilches opened the inning with a hit-by-pitch. One out later junior Evan Spry singled through the right side to put runners at first and second. Freshman Cole Evans was the second Bluejay hit, to load the bases. Hanafan delivered an RBI groundout, then a walk to Andrew Meggs loaded the bags once more. Creighton's second run of the game came on the third hit batter of the frame as senior Parker Upton drove home Spry to make it 3-1.
Seattle answered with a manufactory run in the third, then plated two more runs to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth.
The game remained 4-3 into the ninth inning, Creighton's rally began as junior Josh Dudden drew a pinch-hit walk. Upton followed with Creighton's second free pass of the frame. One out later, sophomore Jared Wegner was Creighton's sixth batter to be hit by a pitch to full the bags. Moments later Vilches was hit by a pitch to knot the game at 3-3. The Redhawks went to the bullpen, yet freshman Cam Frederick came through with the decisive sacrifice fly to plate Upton.
Creighton closer John Sakowski picked up the win with two innings of scoreless baseball, limiting Seattle to one hit. Three Bluejay bullpen arms held Seattle to just two hits, while striking out eight Redhawk hitters over the final 5.2 innings.
Creighton returns home this evening, but will be back on the diamond on Friday, Feb. 21st as the Bluejays face San Jose State at 8:00 pm (CT).
