San Jose, Calif. -- Led by seven innings of shutout ball from sophomore Dylan Tebrake and a three RBI triple by sophomore Andrew Meggs, the Creighton baseball team took the series opener 7-0 at San Jose State on Friday, Feb. 21st.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 3-1 on the season, while the Spartans fell to 0-5.
Early in the game the Bluejays took advantage of San Jose State mistakes, plating single runs in each of the first four frames.
In the opening inning freshman Cam Frederick reached second on an error, took third via a sacrifice bunt from junior Josh Dudden, then came home via a sac fly off the bat of senior Ryan Mantle. C
Creighton's second inning run was manufactured with junior Evan Spry driving a leadoff single to right, sophomore Andrew Meggs moving him to second with a sac bunt, then junior Will Hanafan delivering an RBI single to center.
The third run to cross the plate for the Bluejays was another Spartan miscue as senior Parker Upton drew a two-out walk. The Bluejay shortstop stole second, then went to third on a throwing error. Moments later he scored as Mantle reached on the second error of the inning.
In the fourth Creighton scored on a leadoff single by catcher David Vilches, then a single by Meggs and a Spartan error in the outfield made it 4-0 in the Bluejays favor.
Creighton plated three runs in the fifth as two walks and a single set the table with two down for Meggs. The California native delighted his hometown fans with a three-run triple to right-center, pushing the Bluejay lead to 7-0.
That cushion was far more than Tebrake needed as the Minnesota native extended his scoreless streak to 12 innings on the season with seven scoreless on Friday to move to 2-0 on the season. In Friday night's victory, Tebrake limited the Spartans to just two hits as he sat seven down on strikes. During the contest Tebrake faced 24 batters, issuing zero free passes as one San Jose State hitter reached on an error.
Spartan starter Spencer Long took the loss (0-2), allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks in 4.2 innings of work.
Creighton and San Jose State continue the three-game series on Saturday, Feb. 22nd at 4:00 pm (CT).
