Mac Mease records close three-set win for lone Bluejay victory
KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell 5-1 to Wichita State on Tuesday morning at the Woodside Health and Tennis Club in Kansas City, Kansas.
The Bluejays moved their season record to 1-2, while the Shockers improved to 6-3.
Senior Mac Mease recorded the Bluejays' lone victory of the day with a three-set victory during the No. 5 singles match. Mease won the first set 7-5 before falling 6-1 in the second. During a third-set 10-point tiebreaker, the Colorado native outlasted his opponent 11-9 and tallied his second victory of the spring.
Stratton Brown and Jose Oscar Diaz also won first sets during singles action. Brown earned a 6-4 win in the opening frame at No. 2 before falling 6-4, 6-2, and Diaz held a 1-0 edge in the No. 4 match with a first-set 6-2 win but lost the final two (6-4, 6-3).
"We had a very good team on the ropes at many times today but couldn't finish enough sets," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We are getting better and hopefully can take enough positives away from this tough loss to build upon before Friday's match at UNO."
The Bluejays and Mavericks will square off on Friday night at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center at 7 p.m.
