Agnew Delivers 38 in Women's Basketball's 77-68 Win at Providence

Providence, R.I. -- Led by a career-high 38 points from senior Jaylyn Agnew, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Providence 77-68 on Saturday, Feb. 8th.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 15-8 on the season and 7-5 in BIG EAST action, while Providence fell to 11-14 overall and 1-11 in conference play.
Providence started the game on fire, hitting its first eight shots. The precision shooting helped the Friars burst out to a 16-8 lead with 4:57 left in the opening quarter. Despite Providence going on to shoot over 83%, 10-of-12 from the field in the first frame, the Bluejays remained within striking distance behind 15 points from seniors Agnew and Olivia Elger. The tandem hit a trio of three pointers in the first ten minutes, while junior Temi Carda added another two from long range. Heading to the second quarter, Providence's lead was trimmed to just 23-21.
Down 27-21 early in the second, the Bluejays got an 11-0 run led by sophomores Payton Brotzki and Griglione. Brotzki started things off with a driving jumper in the paint. After a traditional three-point play from Agnew brought Creighton within one a 27-26 (7:04), then Griglione knocked down back-to-back treys to give the Bluejays a 32-27 lead (4:50). Agnew and Carda surrounded a Providence jumper with two more from long range to force Friar head coach Jim Crowley to use his second timeout with the Bluejays holding a 38-29 lead (3:34).
Providence was able to cut into the Bluejay advantage before halftime, sending the squads to the locker room with Creighton up 43-38.
The third quarter was purely Agnew's as the Kansas native scored 15 of her 38 points in the frame, hitting 5-of-6 shots from the field. Agnew's prowess from the field turned a 52-46 Creighton lead with 5:03 left into a 60-47 edge at the 4:11 mark. During the 8-0 run, Agnew delivered five of the Bluejays eight points, with the other three coming from Elger.
Agnew sat at 35 points heading into the fourth, then put the Bluejays' lead back into double-digits to open the fourth at 68-56 (8:31). Agnew took just two shots the remainder of the game as she turned her attention to the defensive end to help Creighton coast to the easy win.
Agnew's 38 points led all scorers, while Elger and Carda finished with 14 and 11 points respectively. Providence got a team-high 19 points from Mary Baskerville as four Friars posted double figures. The other three being Earlette Scott with 16 points, Alyssa Geary with 12 points and Kaela Webb with 10 points. The 38-point performance from Agnew is the most since Marissa Janning and McKenzie Fujan each scored 38 points during the 2013-14 season.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Friday, Feb. 14th in the Bluejays' annual Pink Game to support Breast Cancer Awareness. Creighton will battle St. John's in the contest, with a 6:00 pm tip, the game will be broadcast on FS2.
