Payton Brotzki scores a career-high 18 points, 14 in the first half
Omaha, Neb. -- Payton Brotzki had 14 of her career-high 18 points in the first half, and Temi Carda had 13 of her 15 points after the break as the Creighton women's basketball team delivered head coach Jim Flanery his 350th career victory with a 65-57 win vs. Georgetown on Saturday, January 30th.
The game was Creighton's (4-6, 3-3 BIG EAST) first since January 3 after eight different postponements related to COVID-19 and helped the Bluejays climb into sixth place in the BIG EAST standings. Georgetown (1-7, 1-7 BIG EAST) lost its sixth consecutive game.
Fueled by Brotzki's hot start, Creighton led 15-14 after the first quarter. Brotzki drained a pair of three-pointers and converted a traditional three-point play to account for CU's first nine points of the afternoon The junior from Papillion then beat the horn at the end of the first quarter with her third triple of the quarter to give CU the one-point edge. Kelsey Ransom paced GU with eight points in the opening quarter.
The Bluejays missed their first nine shots of the second quarter before an 11-2 run to end the first half sent CU to the locker room with a 29-24 lead. Five different women scored in the late burst for CU, which out-rebounded GU 13-3 in the frame.
CU built a 40-30 lead midway through the third quarter, only to allow Georgetown to score the next six points. But CU countered with 10 of the final 14 points of the third quarter to take a 50-40 lead into the final frame.
Georgetown held Creighton scoreless for a four-minute stretch to claw within 58-52 before Mykel Parham's first career three-point attempt beat the shot clock with 2:02 remaining to give CU a comfortable cushion. Milan Bolden-Morris helped the Hoyas in one final rally, burying a three-pointer and then a foul shot on consecutive possessions to bring GU within 63-56 with 31.8 left, only to see Carda and Ronsiek make free throws in the final 22 seconds to ice the victory.
Ransom led Georgetown with 22 points, and Bolden-Morris recorded 16.
Creighton returns to the court on Monday at 2 p.m. when it hosts second-place Marquette (10-2, 7-1 BIG EAST) in a game that will be broadcast on BEDN.
