Creighton gets goals from Alejandro Maillet and Callum Watson
Omaha, Neb. -- Alejandro Maillet and Callum Watson finished passes from Diego Gutierrez, while Paul Kruse made six saves in Creighton Men's Soccer's 2-0 win over Xavier on Wednesday, Oct. 20th.
The victory lifted the Bluejays to 5-6-2 on the season and 2-4-1 in BIG EAST action, while Xavier fell to 8-6-0 overall and 2-5-0 in conference play.
Early in the contest the Musketeers controlled possession and created several dangerous chances. Each time Kruse denied Xavier, making five saves in the first half to keep a clean sheet.
Creighton began to assert themselves in the latter portion of the first period. That momentum continued as the two squads returned to the pitch after halftime. The Bluejays' aggressive approach paid dividends in the 61st minute (60:58) as Gutierrez lofted a pass to Maillet from the left corner of the goal for an open header into the net. The tally was Maillet's second of 2021.
Four minutes later Gutierrez drew attention along the right side, then fed Watson at the top of the box for an open shot that found the back of the net in the 64th minute (63:29). It was Watson's first goal of the season.
The Bluejays coasted to the victory down the stretch, closing the match with a 16-12 edge in shots as well as a 5-4 advantage in corners created.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when it hosts defending BIG EAST Tournament champion Seton Hall in Morrison Stadium.
