Providence, R.I. -- A quartet of players stepped forward in differing quarters to lead the Creighton women's basketball team to a 71=56 win over Providence on Sunday, December 19.
The Win lifted the Bluejays to 7-3 on the season and 3-0 in BIG EAST play, while Providence fell to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
Sophomore Lauren Jensen jump started the Bluejays in the opening quarter, dropping 17 points in the first 10 minutes to push Creighton out to a 28-11 lead. Jensen closed the frame 7-of-8 from the field, hitting three buckets from long range.
Â
As hot as Creighton was in the opening frame 12-of-17 (71%), the Bluejays cooled in the second quarter shooting just 6-of-20 (30%). Senior Rachael Saunders kept Creighton afloat with a three-ball and a traditional three-point play to allow Creighton to hold a 44-36 edge at the half.
Â
It was Carly Bachelor's turn to shine in the third as the Kansas native scored 10 of her 15 points in the frame to help extend the Bluejay advantage back to double-digits at 59-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
Â
The final stanza saw sophomore Morgan Maly knock down a pair of triples late to secure Creighton's victory.
Â
"It's really exciting, both playing and watching, that anyone on our team can have a great game on a given night," said Bachelor. "Today Lauren had 17 points in the first quarter, that was crazy, I've never seen anything like that."
Â
Jensen finished with a game-high 19 points, while Bachelor delivered 15 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Maly and Saunders also closed the game in double-figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Â
Providence got 11 points and 14 rebounds from Janai Crooms, while Mary Baskerville returned to the floor with a team-high 13 points.
