Mac Mease earned 100th combined victory to become the 12th Bluejay in program history to reach the 100-win plateau
CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Creighton men's tennis team opened its trip to Chicago with a 5-2 victory over Chicago State on Friday evening. The Bluejays will also play at DePaul on Saturday afternoon and against UIC on Sunday in Aurora, Illinois before returning to Omaha.
The Bluejays improved to 1-1 with Friday's win over the Cougars.
Creighton started the action by dropping only four games during doubles play. Stratton Brown and Joe Hoff claimed a 6-1 win at the top position, while Mac Mease and Shin Inoue also picked up 6-1 victory at No. 3. Jose Oscar Diaz and Matthew Lanahan closed out the first portion of the match with a 6-2 win at No. 2.
Mease's doubles victory marked his 100th combined victory in singles and doubles to become the 12th Bluejay in program history to record 100 or more victories.
The Bluejays clinched the overall dual with four straight-sets singles wins. Armando Gandini earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 5 position, and Oscar Diaz secured a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3. Lanahan needed a tiebreaker in the opening set at No. 2 before winning the second set by a 6-4 margin. Brown outlasted his opponent at the top slot with a pair of tiebreaker wins. The senior won the first frame 7-5 in the breaker and 7-4 in the second.
Joe Hoff opened the No. 6 match with a 6-3 win before narrowly losing the final two sets in tiebreakers, while Shin Inoue dropped his first frame at No. 4, bounced back for a win in the second but fell in the deciding third set.
"I'm proud of how we competed today," graduate assistant coach Aaron Chalstrom said. "From the first point in doubles, we were ready to go and brought good energy. We fought through some tough moments in singles as well on all courts. It was good to get a win and we're excited for two more challenging matches this weekend."
The Bluejays head to the Lakeshore Sport & Fitness Center on Saturday afternoon for a match against BIG EAST foe DePaul at 4:15 p.m.
