Nashville, Tenn. -- Trailing 3-0 after two innings, the Creighton offense found its rhythm with nine unanswered runs to split a doubleheader at Belmont with a 9-3 win in the second game on Saturday, Feb. 27.
The win pushed Creighton to 2-1 on the season, while Belmont fell to 3-2.
Down 3-0 entering the top of the third, the Bluejays got rolling as junior David Vilches was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Sterling Hayes followed with a single to left to put runners at first and second. Freshman Cam Frederick moved both Bluejay runners up 90 feet by dropping a sacrifice bunt in front of the plate. Junior David Webel broke through with a triple to right, driving in two. The next Creighton hitter, senior Parker Upton, knotted the score at 3-3 with a grounder to first.
The game remained tied into the bottom of the sixth. During Creighton's turn at the dish, the Bluejays' patience paid off in a big way. In the frame Creighton plated six runs on five walks, two hits batters and an error in the outfield. A pair of one-out walks to senior Ryan Mantle and sophomore Jared Wegner put runners at first and second. With two down in the frame, Hayes was hit by a pitch to fill the bags. Sophomore Andrew Meggs drew a pinch-hit walk to give Creighton a 4-3 lead. The carousel continued as Webel and Upton each collected RBI walks to extend Creighton's edge to 6-3. Finally a fly ball lifted into left field, which was questionably ruled an error, cleared the bases to give the Bluejays a 9-3 advantage.
On the mound Creighton starter Griffin Holderfield limited Belmont to three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings. The turning point of the game came in the fifth as senior John Sakowski stranded a pair of inherited runners. Sakowski went on to record the final seven outs to earn his first win (1-0) of the season.
Webel led the offense with three hits, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Creighton completes its four-game trip to Nashville on Sunday, Feb. 28 as the Bluejays battle Lipscomb. First pitch has been moved to 12:00 pm to avoid weather.
