3/21/2021 5:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Omaha, Neb. -- Entering Sunday with one goal in four matches, the Creighton women's soccer team sent three into the back of the net to best Marquette 3-0 on March 21.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 1-4 on the season and 1-3 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette fell to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
Sophomore Skylar Heinrich broke through for her first goal of the season in the 12th minute. The Omaha native finished a play that began on a throw in by sophomore Gabby Grimaldi. Junior Ansley Atkinson fielded the pass, sending it to Heinrich just past midfield. Heinrich's speed did the rest, racing down the right side of the pitch for the goal.
The score remained 1-0 in Creighton's favor through halftime. In the 50th minute of play a penalty in the box gave Creighton its first PK of the season. Sophomore Aida Kardovic wasted little time punching in the opportunity to extend the Bluejay lead to 2-0.
The final goal was another tally from Heinrich, this coming in the 64th minute of play. This time Bluejay freshman Alexis Johnson cleared a ball from the Creighton box. Sophomore Lea Høiness headed it forward, then Heinrich raced from midfield toward the Marquette end. Stopping the ball to dodge three defenders, Heinrich sent her second goal into the upper right corner.
Redshirt freshman Mikayla Grocki notched her first win and her first shutout in her first match in net, recording one save.
Creighton out shot Marquette 14-5 in the match.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Thursday, March 25 at Xavier. The match is slated to begin at 12:00 pm
