Omaha, Neb. -- A trio of crooked frames (five runs in the sixth, eight in eighth and two in the ninth) lifted the Creighton Baseball team to a 15-2 victory over Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday, March 6.
The win gave Creighton the series victory over its crosstown rival, while the Bluejays moved to 4-2 on the season. The loss dropped the Mavericks to 3-5 overall.
The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning as Mike Boeve lauched a solo home run to right-center. The game moved into the sixth inning as a pitcher's duel between Creighton senior Jonah Smith and UNO's Spencer Koelewyn.
Trailing 1-0 entering the sixth, Creighton offense took advantage of the Maverick's miscues on the mound. The Bluejays put the first two men on base via a double from sophomore Andrew Meggs, then fellow sophomore Sterling Hayes was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice put both runners in scoring position. Freshman Alan Roden was the second Bluejay in the inning to be plunked, loading the bases and chasing Koelewyn.
With two down in the frame, UNO reliever Josiah Scott hit senior Dax Roper, walked senior Parker Upton and hit junior Garrett Gilbert to give Creighton a 3-1 edge. Junior David Webel made Scott pay for his wildness with a two-run double down the right field line.Â
Gilbert launched a solo shot to left to open the eighth, pushing Creighton's lead to 6-1. Before the inning would end the Bluejays added seven more runs on three singles, two hit batters and Gilberts second blast of the inning.
UNO added a run in the eighth and the Bluejays answered with two more in the ninth.
Smith limited the Mavericks to one run on five hits in six innings to earn the win (1-1). The senior hurler notched eight strikeouts and issued just one free pass. Koelewyn took the loss (0-1), allowing three runs on four hits in 5.1 innings.
Gilbert guided the offense with a 2-for-4, five RBI game. In total six different Bluejays delivered a multi-hit performance in the win.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Sunday, March 7 at 1 pm as the Bluejays go for the sweep of UNO.
