WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Creighton men's soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 2 Georgetown during a semifinal match of the BIG EAST Championship Presented by JEEP on Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C.
Joe DaLuz converted the game-winning goal during the 84th minute with a blistering shot from 17 yards out towards the far post and past a diving Paul Kruse. Kruse made his first start in goal for the Bluejays since March 6 against Xavier and made a pair of saves on Thursday.
The Bluejays moved their season record to 6-6-0, while the Hoyas improved to 8-0-2 and advanced to Saturday's championship match.
Creighton ended the match with a 12-8 edge in shots, including 4-3 on goal.
The Bluejays created multiple chances in the first half of action with the wind at their back but did not convert.
Callum Watson gave Creighton an early chance in the ninth minute, but the junior midfielder's free kick was saved at the right post by BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Giannis Nikopolidis. Watson also had a chance near the penalty spot during final minute of the opening half, but his shot sailed high of the goal.
Duncan McGuire also had a run out opportunity during the middle of the half, but Nikopolidis came off his line and swiped the ball away from the charging Bluejay forward.
Creighton out shot top-seeded Georgetown 4-1 in the first 45 minutes of action.
The Bluejays continued to create chances after the halftime break and had eight shots.
During the 68th minute, Watson sent a corner kick in from the far side of the field towards the middle of the box where Luke Mitchell sent a low header towards goal that was stopped.
Charles Auguste sent a rocket from about 20 yards out during the 79th minute, but the Georgetown goalkeeper stopped the ball and kept the Bluejays out of the goal column.
After the Hoyas went ahead in the 84th minute, the Bluejays applied pressure to find the equalizer. Watson forced the fourth Georgetown save of the match and two others shots were blocked before the clock showed all zeros.
Watson led Creighton with six shot attempts.
The Bluejays are forced to wait until Monday and the NCAA Selection Show as Creighton seeks an at-large bid into the 36-team NCAA tournament bracket. The selection show will be streamed on NCAA.com on Monday at 11 a.m. Central.
