Series with Georgetown Changes Location and Times
Creighton's BIG EAST series at Georgetown (April 23-25), has been moved from Shirley Povich Field to Shipley Field at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on the campus of the
University of Maryland. The change in venue is due to Montgomery County's guidelines regarding visiting teams from outside the DC/Maryland/Virginia region at Shirley Povich Field during the coronavirus pandemic.
Â
The Hoyas and Bluejays are scheduled to play four games in three days this weekend. Weather concerns and the Maryland spring game has altered the schedule as well. The Bluejays and Hoyas will play a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at 2:00 pm (CT). The remaining games are scheduled for Saturday, April 24 at 1:00 pm (CT) and Sunday, April 25 at 11:00 am (CT).
Scouting the Hoyas (2021: 3-5, 3-3 BIG EAST)
Without a doubt Georgetown was the team in the BIG EAST most impacted by COVID. Despite getting hired in September of 2020, new Hoyas' head coach Edwin Thompson
could not meet his team in person until March of 2021. To that end, the Hoyas were unable to have official practices until the third week of March.
The Hoyas first game of the 2021 season came on April 7, a midweek contest against Virginia Commonwealth. The season began in earnest that weekend as the Hoyas faced Connecticut to kick off BIG EAST action.
Going scoreless in three of their first four games, the Hoyas went 0-4. Since then the Hoyas rebounded to take three of four from St. John's last weekend.
At the plate Georgetown is hitting .229 as a team, led by a trio of players over .300. Conor Nolan is atop the Hoyas hitting chart at .389, the next two top hitters are Andrew Ciufo (.353) and Michael Eze (.318).
On the mound the Hoyas sport a 6.19 ERA. In the four games with St. John's, the Hoyas limited the Red Storm to one run in the opening game.
Scouting the Bluejays (2021: 11-7, 3-0 BIG EAST)
Creighton enters the weekend series with Georgetown riding a seven-game win streak.
Powering the Bluejays' surge has been pitching. Creighton took a scoreless streak of 31.1 inning into the Sunday contest with San Jose State.
On the mound Creighton has a 4.35 ERA as a team. During its seven-game win streak the Bluejays have allowed just 15 runs
At the plate the Bluejays are hitting .285 as a team, led by six regulars over .290. Pacing Creighton are sophomore Andrew Meggs (.389), freshman Alan Roden (.343), sophomore Sterling Hayes (.327), senior Ryan Mantle (.322).
Trio of Consecutive Shutouts Marks First in Bluejay History
Creighton's 31.1 scoreless inning streak set a pair of school records. It marked the first time in recorded history that Creighton posted three consecutive shutouts. Consequently the 31.1 innings marks the most consecutive scoreless innings posted.
The Bluejays' trio of shutouts began on April 10 in an eight-inning 10-0 win over Villanova. It continued in an 8-0 win over the Wildcats on April 11, then a 5-0 win over San Jose State on April 17.
The scoreless streak began with the final four outs of Creighton's 9-2 win over Villanova on April 9, then carried into the fifth inning of the Bluejays' 6-4 win over the
Spartans on April 18.
