Vontz Named to All-Tournament Team As Men's Golf Finishes Eighth at BIG EAST Championship

Vontz finishes in fifth place at an even-par 216
BOWLING GREEN, Fla. -- Nate Vontz tied for fifth place to earn All-Tournament Team honors at the BIG EAST Championships on Wednesday in Bowling Green, Fla., Vontz fired an even-par 216 over 54 holes to help Creighton place eighth in the team standings.
Vontz wrapped up an outstanding junior season with rounds of 72, 71 and 73 to tie for fifth place. The Lincoln product shot par or better in 11-of-18 rounds this spring and led CU with a 72.06 scoring average, the best by a Bluejay since John Sutko in 2006-07. Vontz had six birdies in the final 11 holes of Tuesday's second round and led the field with -3 scoring on par 4's during the tournament. By virtue of his top-five finish, Vontz earned a spot on the BIG EAST's All-Tournament Team.
Charlie Zielinski placed 15th following loops of 73, 74 and 74 for a 221 aggregate. Zielinski was tied for second in the field with 37 pars during the event. He averaged 73.56 shots per round during his freshman campaign.
Jake Kluver closed his freshman year in 36th place at the league championship. He started the tourney with scores of 77 and 76 before a final round 85. He also fired CU's lone eagle of the tournament, which came in the final round on the par-4 sixth hole that measured 345 yards.
Jackson Thompson placed 37th, following up a 77 on Monday with an 82 in back-to-back rounds.
Cade McCallum shot rounds of 79 and 83 before being replaced in the line-up on Wednesday by Jack Olson . Olson stepped up to the challenge with a 75 in the final round, which matched his season-best.
Creighton's 296.1 scoring average for the season ranks as the program's best by 4.4 shots since 2003, and CU finished with a team score of 900 or less in four-of-six tournaments this spring.
UConn won its first BIG EAST Championship since 1994 with an 869 total to beat Marquette by six shots. The Huskies had three top-10 finishers, paced by third-place Jimmy Paradise (214). Butler's Michael Cascino birdied the 18th hole to force a playoff against Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn, then beat Eichhorn with a long putt on the third playoff hole to clinch an individual bid to the NCAA Regionals.
The BIG EAST Championship featured nine teams (St. John's dropped out in advance due to COVID protocols) and 50 different men competed individually. The tourney was contested at Streamsong Resort, which measured 7,060 yards on a par-72 layout.
Creighton returns to the course in the fall.
