Baseball Splits Doubleheader with St. John's

Bluejays Claim Opener 11-4, Fall 4-1 in Nightcap
Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton Baseball team split a doubleheader with St. John's on Saturday, May 1 as the Bluejays took the opening game 11-4, but dropped the nightcap 4-1.
Following Saturday's action the Bluejays are 16-9 on the season and 8-2 in BIG EAST play, while St. John's moved to 14-14 overall and 5-9 in conference action.
Game 1: Creighton 11, St. John's 4 (7-innings)
St. John's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, plating a pair of runs on two singles and a walk. Vincent Bianchi got things started with a single to right, then a one-out walk to Jake Lazzaro put two men on for St. John's. A wild pitch moved both Red Storm runners into scoring position, allowing Chris Conniff to drive in a run on an RBI ground out. Ryan Hogan followed with an RBI infield single.
Creighton responded in similar fashion with two runs on three singles, a walk and a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth. Junior David Webel reached on an infield single to open the frame, then sophomore Andrew Meggs drew a walk. One out later a single to center from Alan Roden loaded the bases. Creighton's first run crossed the plate on a wild pitch, then a sacrifice fly by senior Parker Upton knotted the game at 2-2.
The following inning saw Creighton plate six runs with the benefit of just one hit. Three walks and two Bluejay batters were hit in the frame to help matters, vaulting Creighton out to an 8-2 edge.
The Bluejays tacked one three more runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 11-2, before St. John's scored two in the seventh.
Creighton starter Jonah Smith earned the win (5-2), limiting St. John's to two runs on four hits. Smith closed the six-inning outing with nine strikeouts.
St. John's reliever Tim Cunningham took the loss (0-1), allowing four runs (three earned) on one hit, one walk and two hit batters in one-third of an inning.
Upton was one of seven Bluejays to finish with one hit, closing the game with three RBI.
Game 2: St. John's 4, Creighton 1
The second game featured a much stronger performance on the mound from the Red Storm.
St. John's took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, courtesy of a leadoff double from Carson Bartels and an RBI single by Brian Morrell.
The Red Storm pushed its advantage to 2-0 via a solo home run by David Williams in the second.
The Bluejays' lone run of the game came in the sixth as Roden laced a leadoff double to right field and senior Ryan Mantle guided an RBI single up the middle.
Starter Brian Hendry kept Creighton's offense in check into the sixth inning, allowing one run in 5.2 innings to earn the win (2-2).
St. John's plated a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, getting three scoreless frames from its bullpen. Closer Ethan Routzahn worked a flawless ninth for his fifth save of the year.
Creighton starter Cade Lommel took the loss (3-2), allowing two runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings.
Roden and freshman Nolan Clifford each posted a pair of hits in the loss.
The two teams wrap up the four-game series on Sunday, May 2 with a 12:00 pm first pitch.
