Baseball Begins Pivotal Weekend at Seton Hall

Omaha, Neb. -- The top two teams in the BIG EAST Conference take the diamond this weekend in a series that will go a long way to determining the regular season champion as Creighton takes on Seton Hall in a four-game set in New Jersey from May 14-16.

Series with Pirates: Creighton leads Seton Hall, 18-6
The Bluejays and Pirates have crafted a budding rivalry since becoming BIG EAST foes in 2014. Creighton has a decided advantage in games won presently, but make no mistake, this series has had fire and been hard fought.
Overall the Bluejays are 7-2 against the Pirates in road games, but three of those were played in Staten Island, N.Y. as the Pirates home stadium was being renovated in 2019. Â

Scouting the Pirates (2021: 21-17, 14-5 BIG EAST)
The Pirates are hitting their stride at the right time, going 7-1 at home in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall is 6-2 over its last eight games in conference action,
The Pirates are hitting .273 as a team, led by five regulars at .299 or above. Speedsters William Gale (.330) and Jerry Huntzinger (.309) guide the Seton Hall offense with 14 and 24 stolen bases respectively. While Gale and Huntzinger set the table, Casey Dana (.325) and Matt Toke (.303) provide the thump. Dana leads the team with six home runs and 28 RBI, while Toke has 25 RBI. Rounding out the dangerous quartet is Devin Hack (.299).
On the mound the Pirates have a team ERA of 3.87, but the starting quartet of David Festa (1.81), Ryan McLinskey (2.00), Joe Cinnella (2.45) and Tyler Burnham (3.70) have been outstanding. Sunday starter Burhham earned a National Player of the Week honor two weeks ago with a no-hitter, featuring 14 strikeouts.
Scouting the Bluejays (2021: 19-9, 11-2 BIG EAST)
Since opening the season 4-7, Creighton has won 15 of 17 games. The Bluejays have found different ways to win during the stretch. Early the pitching staff delivered five shutouts, while over the last six games (five wins) the offense has put up 11 runs in three wins.
On the mound Creighton has a 3.88 ERA as a team. Dueling aces Dylan Tebrake and Jonah Smith have guided the pitching staff's improvement.
Tebrake and Smith are a combined 8-0 with a pair of complete games in BIG EAST action. The duo have tossed 54.1 of 65.0 innings in those eight games, notching five strikeouts and walking just 12.
At the plate the Bluejays are hitting .302 as a team in BIG EAST action and .284 overall, led by five regulars over .310. Pacing Creighton are freshman Alan Roden (.377), sophomore Andrew Meggs (.364), senior Ryan Mantle (.323), senior Parker Upton (.312) and freshman Nolan Clifford (.310).
Roden Ascends Back to First in Nation in RBI per Game
For the third time in the last five weeks, freshman Alan Roden is atop the NCAA in RBI per game with 1.57. Matthew Christian of Campbell is second with 54 RBI in 28 games (1.50).
Roden is also in fifth place this week in doubles per game (0.46). In addition he is 10th in the country in slugging percentage at .755 and 30th in Home Runs per game (.320).

What's On the Line This Week in the BIG EAST
With just two weeks remaining in the BIG EAST Conference, Creighton and Seton Hall are both on the verge of clinching a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament (top four teams in the conference).
The bottom four teams in the BIG EAST best possible finishes are:
Villanova 12-9 (.571)
Butler 12-9 (.571)
St. John's 13-13 (.500)
Georgetown 12-13 (.480)
Creighton sits at 11-2 in conference, while Seton Hall is 14-5. With one victory the Bluejays would finish no worse than 12-9 and hold the tiebreaker over Villanova and Butler, thus clinching a spot. If Seton Hall records two victories the Pirates would finish no worse than 16-11 (.593), thus clinching a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament.
The Butler Series Came in Two
Weather forced Creighton and Butler to try to play a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. More than just games came in pairs on Saturday as senior Dax Roper launched a pair of home runs in the opener, senior Parker Upton hit home runs in each game and freshman Alan Roden smashed a pair of home runs in the final game on Saturday.
